Description:
"Dock-ish Lands" was Entry #39 in noobmapmaker's 2017 Map Design Contest.
This map was actually my attempt to recreate the map, Docklands, from the PS1 port, Red Alert: Retaliation (originally one of the Counter-Strike skirmish maps).
When I was younger, it was my favorite skirmish map because of its focus on naval combat (despite the fact that the game's AI couldn't build ships or subs).
I played the map so often, that I wanted to see if I could recreate it just from memory and I actually got pretty close.
Again, this was all completely from memory without reference. I didn't look at an image of the original map until after I finished making it.
In a way, this map is more of a spiritual successor to Docklands.
In terms of locations on the map, I just felt like pointing out that the upper left corner spawn affectionately earned the name, "The Bitch Corner", because of how strategically bad it was (one way out and no immediate access to water).
I included some features to the map to update it for OpenRA.
Here's a list of changes I made:
- Added more beach areas for invasions
- Added two oil pumping stations (both have 3 capture-able Oil Derricks)
- Widened the far right passable terrain that connects the north and south sections of the east landmass to prevent clogging that was present in the original version of the map
- Fleshed out the east landmass's southern coast (originally was open space with a small set of roads to nowhere).
------
Additional Notes:
I accidentally removed the 8th spawn point on the eastern landmass to make room for the oil pumping station; making the player count 4 to 3 as opposed to the original 4 to 4.
I might add it back in at some point but, it's unlikely because the lost spawn area wasn't present in the PS1 port (ie. didn't exist to me). It would be a bit of a challenge to add an 8th spawn.
The map could play out in one of two ways, team continents or "kill everyone on your starting continent before invading the other continent".
