Description:
Welcome to Scorched Earth, a MOBA-like multiplayer game for OpenRA. Two teams of up to five players battle for control of a frozen Russian valley.
Each base is run by a team AI, and at the heart of the base is the Construction Yard. Take out the enemy's Con Yard, and victory is yours. The team AI channel infantry down the three lanes toward the enemy base. Tesla Coils guard the lanes, capable of taking out all but the toughest vehicles in a single arc.
Players start with one Light Tank, reasonably agile, but not very capable by itself. To build more, each player has a War Factory, and one Oil Derrick providing a trickle of credits, only 300 a minute. Enemy units and structures give bounties when destroyed, which is vital to build more powerful units. There are fifteen available units to build, each playing very different roles. Though the cost varies, every unit takes a whole minute to build. Still, this means that if you can stay alive, you can control multiple units. Combat-wise, they’re mostly unchanged from the base Red Alert mod, so no surprises.
Between lanes is the jungle, though it's more of a frosty woodland here. A hostile neutral faction dwells inside. Once every 45 seconds, the four War Factories pump out Flamethrowers (closest two to top and bot) and Light Tanks (closest two to mid) ad infinitum, which can make very short work of lightly armoured vehicles. But if you can keep their forces down with a Ranger, APC or even Tanya, then credits aplenty.
An Engineer can capture one of the two Radar Domes, either side of the river. This will grant access to the Heavy Paratrooper Drop, consisting of flamers and rocket soldiers. Listen out for “signal flare detected”, you won't have long to react.
The Gap Generators scattered around create a thick shroud. You can't shoot what you can't see, making the shroud a good hiding place. The AI infantry can’t see beyond their cell, making them susceptible to shroud ambushes. Capture a Gap Gen to remove the shroud for your team.
Across the river from the Radar Domes are two Upgraded MAD Tanks. Armed with a rapid-fire Tesla Coil, they are tough to take down, and impossible solo. Killing one nets you an Mobile Radar Uplink, which if you keep alive grants you access to the legendary Soviet Soldier Volkov. His prodigious resilience is diminished since the events of Deus Ex Machina and he goes down quick to infantry fire, flak and swarms, but he is completely immune to all Tesla weaponry. His signature grenade launcher is restored, dealing heavy damage to tough armour and buildings, making him an effective Tesla Coil killer, if properly supported. You only get one shot with him, so make it count. If you hear “Enemy approaching,” prepare yourself.
